GJA condemns cold attitude of magistrate towards Journalists

 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed reservations about a recent directive of the Magistrate at the Accra District Court, Efua Sackey, that reporters covering the case involving Dr. Obeng Andoh of the Obengfo hospital should have their phones confiscated before the court proceedings. 

The GJA believes the conduct of the magistrate has the tendency to undermine the country’s fledgling democracy and development. 

A statement signed by GJA president Roland Affail Monney notes that the Judicial Press Corps is one of the finest in the country and the training the Service has been organizing for members to enhance their knowledge on reportage of court proceedings makes them appreciate the rules of engagement in court. 

It is for these and other reasons that the attitude of the magistrate must be discouraged. 

The GJA has therefore urged the Chief Justice to call the Magistrate to order in order not to undermine the cordial relations between the Judicial Service and the media.
