Tumu Municipal Hospital in dire need of beds

With just three beds in its emergency ward, the Tumu Municipal Hospital in Sissala East of the Upper West Region is in dire need of beds to make the ward fully functional. 

The situation has led to patients with emergency cases lying on floor mattresses for treatment, a situation which poses more risks to the patients. 

This came to the fore when the Acting Medical Superintendent Charles Wood spoke to Radio Ghana at Tumu. 

He said the 104 capacity bed hospital needs more resources if it is to give patients better care. 

The Sissala East District also has one ambulance which is in a poor state. 

The ambulance is said to be in a poor state and cannot transport patients to other facilities. 

Due to this, patients who are referred to the Nandom District Hospital or the Regional Hospital have to find their own means of transport. 

According to Mr. Wood, the situation has devastating consequences on patients. 

Touching on the situation at the Children’s ward, Dr Wood said the ward needs an additional fifty beds to augment the thirty to be able to deal with the many cases of malaria among children this rainy season. 

He said when children are paired with adults on beds while others are put on floor mattresses, it engenders infections and diseases.
