Research on corruption risks at basic education level publicized

A research report on corruption risks at the basic education level and the likely impact on achieving the sustainable development goals four and five has been disseminated in Accra. 

The research was carried out by the Ghana Integrity Initiative and the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition with funding from the transparency international. 

Disseminating the findings to stakeholders in the education sector, researcher for the project, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan said the country failed to leverage on the achievements and failures of the Millennium Development Goals to proper implement the Sustainable Development Goals. 

He said Ghana achieved only four out of the eight MDG's because of injustice, inequality and disregard to the rule of law. 

Prof. Al-Hassan said the country's education at all levels have not yielded the desired results because the sector is saddled with bribery, cheating and corruption. 

He cited several instances where school buildings have collapsed killing pupils and said the situation could have been avoided if those entrusted with funding for logistics did their work well. 

The Programs Manager of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, Mary Addah expressed shock at the findings and said corruption in forms must not be tolerated so that resources meant for national development agenda's such as education are protected and utilised for the benefits of all.
