Meteorological Agency warns of more rains in the coming days

The Meteorological Agency has warned that there will be heavy rainfall this year, especially in the Southern sector. The Director of Research at the Agency, Charles Kweku York, said this year’s rains would be greater than what was recorded in 2017. 

Mr. York said the rains are expected to continue till July.  He said if society does not do things right, there will be more floods. 

His comments follow last night’s heavy down pour in the capital. Monday night's rains in Accra caused a lot of damage to property and displaced scores of residents. 

According to Radio Ghana’s correspondents, the resultant floods from the rain did not spare some inhabitants in low lying areas of the capital, particularly Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, Maamobi and several other areas. At Odawna, dozens are said to have been displaced. 

The MP for Klottey Korley, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, in a facebook post said some families who were trapped around Adabraka-Sahara had to be rescued. Dr. Zanetor Rawlings said the flood water was still around waist level at the time of her visit. She said Adabraka and other parts got flooded. According to her, she got to Odawna around 11pm and after waiting unsuccessfully for rescue support, she and others managed to evacuate the women and children and some of the elderly to Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist and Pentecost Churches in Adabraka. 

This was with the tireless efforts of volunteers in the area including a gentleman who made several trips with his trotro from Sahara to the safe havens. She said the volunteers worked together to bring blankets, hot chocolate and tea and some mosquito coils to those displaced. 

She thanked those young men and women who helped to distribute the hot drinks and blankets, as well as those who helped to write down the names of as many displaced persons as possible. Dr Zanetor also thanked the security and pastoral staff at the two churches who granted access to their premises for the night. 

She said she left Odawna around 3.50 am and at the time, Sahara Park was still submerged below water that is waist deep. Many other parts of the capital were badly affected by the downpour.

Some residents were trapped in their homes. Some badly affected areas include Okponglo, Shiashie, Weija, Old barrier, Ofankor, Dansoman, and Kaneshie.
