Calls for government to invest in emergency healthcare

Quality Health Care delivery remains a crucial indicator in measuring the development challenges of every country. 

Following the ''No Bed Syndrome'' mantra at our hospitals which claimed the lives of 70-year-old Opoku Acheampong, many have called for sanctions to be meted out to heads of facilities that turned away the victim with the excuse that there was no bed. 

Speaking on GBC's Current Affairs ‘Talking Point’ which discussed "Healthcare Delivery in Ghana", Assistant General Secretary, Ghana Medical Association Dr. Titus Beyuo said a decision to turn away patients must come from Superior Officers who can take full responsibility for their actions. 

He said the issue of supervision is key for the whole country and not only the health sector. 

Dr Beyuo emphasized the need for properly trained bed managers in all health facilities who will manage and keep information on distribution of beds as a resource in our hospitals. 

He urged government to as a matter of urgency invest in Emergency Health Care and make it one of its top most priority.

MP for Ledzokuku and Member, Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Dr Benard Oko-Boye has called for a Toll Free Number to assist patients to quickly report when they are turned away at health facilities. 

He stressed that the existence of a Toll Free Number will deter doctors from being wreckless in the discharge of their duties.
