Committee to develop ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ charter inaugurated

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says it is unacceptable for Ghana to continue depending on foreign aid, 60 years after independence. 

He emphasized that the over reliance on foreign assistance deprives the country of determining absolutely, the development choices for its people. 

President Akufo-Addo made the point when he inaugurated a Thirteen-Member Committee to draw a charter for Ghana Beyond Aid. 

Ghana beyond aid is a deliberate policy by government to tackle the country’s dependency on foreign aid. 

President Akufo-Addo has expressed the desire to get Ghana out of the dependency syndrome, and the inauguration of the 13 member committee is the first step towards achieving it. 

The committee has three months to draw up the ''Ghana beyond aid'' charter to be approved by parliament. 

The charter will be the blue print to help the country achieve the Ghana beyond aid agenda. 

President Akufo-Addo said it is not appropriate for the Country to be continuously dependent on foreign assistance despite being blessed with enough natural resources. 

He asked the committee to take into consideration the various actors in their deliberations. 

The Chairman of the Committee, Yaw Osafo Marfo who is also the senior Minister called for a change in attitude in the way the economy is managed. 

The Committee has representation from some key Ministries including finance, the private sector led by the Private Enterprise Federation, PEF, organised labour represented by the TUC among others.
