Minority boycott of National Identification Card Registration Laudable - Bismarck Ayittey

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mr. Bismarck Ayittey Aborbi said the decision of the minority in Parliament to boycott the registration of the National Identification Card which is scheduled to take place tomorrow is laudable.

He indicated that, Parliament as a representative body is vested with the authority to hold other institutions responsible and accountable to the people of Ghana. 

Speaking on GBC’s Uniiq FM Breakfast Drive show, Mr. Ayittey stated that, National Identification Authority (NIA) has disrespected parliament by refusing to appear before the legislative body to answer questions on the cost involved in the contract for the registration of the National Identification Card despite the numerous calls made by parliament. 

Mr. Ayittey added that, the issue of not accepting the Voter ID Card as part of the documents required for the registration is problematic and should be amended. This according to him would deprive a lot of the populace from acquiring the card. He added that a large number of Ghanaians may lack one of the required documents.  

Documents required for the registration of the National Identification Card include a valid passport or birth certificate as a proof of ID, or the applicant must present a close relative whose ID is verifiable and can vouch for the applicants. 

The National Identification Card dubbed the ‘Ghana Card’ is meant to be the primary Identification Card (ID) that citizens will use to access all services in the country, including travelling within the West African sub – region. 
It will also be the Valid ID for applying for a bank account, Passport, telephone number, property acquisition, driver’s license and many more.
