Today marks World Oceans Day

Today marks World Oceans Day. It is a day set aside to recognise the importance of oceans to human life, health and the economy.

In Ghana the day is being celebrated by the Environmental Protection Agency and other organisations to educate communities in coastal areas to change their attitudes towards the ocean and the sea. 

The occasion is dubbed; ''Preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy nation''. Radio Ghana's George Ankrah finds out from Executive Director, Centre for Maritime Law and Security and Director of Research , Ghana Armed Forces Staff College Capt. Dr. Kamal Deen Ali how significant the ocean is to humans and the economy.

Capt, Dr. Kamal Dean said Marine biodiversity especially issues relating to plastic pollution must be addressed. He said the issue is not about whether or not to ban plastics, but to encourage reusable bags as well as policy intervention to address the menace.
