Newmont sanctioned for multiple accident at Newmont Ahafo Mill Expansion in April Newmont Gold Ghana Limited has been fined $500,000 following the recommendation by the committee set up to investigate the April 7 accident at the Company's Ahafo mines killing six people. A statement signed by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu, further directed that ''Consar Ghana limited'' which is working under the supervision of DRA Ghana limited, an Engineering procurement and management agent of Newmont Gold Ghana Limited, have also been fined two million dollars and two hundred thousand dollars each. The Minister has further directed that DRA should open a fully functioning office in Ghana which would be manned by a resident Managing Director within two weeks upon receipt of the report. On the 6th of April this year, six workers working on an underground tunnel at the Ahafo mines of Newmont died when the roof of the tunnel caved in. Following the accident, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources constituted a committee to investigate the incident. Upon conclusion of their investigations, the committee recommended that Newmont Gold Ghana Limited be fined $100,000 for failure to ensure that DRA Ghana Limited obtains a mining services operating permit prior to commence operations at the Ahafo site which is a breach of Regulation 8 section 4 and 5 of LI 2182 of 2012.
