CPMR plans to go into large scale production of treating prostate enlargement

The Centre for Scientific Research, into Plant Medicine is finding it difficult to go into large scale production of a herbal medicine that treats prostate enlargement.

The medicine which is in a form of   capsule a known as URO-500 is on pilot basis for almost a decade.

The Deputy Executive Director of the Centre, Dr. Alfred Appiah disclosed this to journalists belonging to African Media and Malaria Research Network, AMMREN. He said the Centre's plan to launch the product in September might not be possible for fear of not meeting the demand.

An enlarged prostate is a health condition that affects men mostly after the age of 50.  This is considered a natural process of aging and an attempt to stop or reverse it has been has been difficult. As the prostate grows larger, it may press on the urethra.

The Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine at Mampong in the Eastern has been treating people with prostate enlargement with Membrana Suspension for about 25 years. To make the administering of the medicine easier, the centre came out with the capsule form of it; URO-500 in 2008.  

During a visit by the African media and Malaria Network, AMMREN to the Centre, the Deputy Executive Director of the Centre, Dr. Alfred Appiah said the acute stage where the patient cannot urinate at all, with the medicine, the patient urinate in three hours.  He said with the chronic stage, it take about three months on the medicine to get the prostate to shrink.

Dr. Appaih, noted that with the acute condition the medicine works in a day. For the drug to be launded and put on the market, production needs to be increased meaning modern equipment to facilitate that.  Currently the centre produces 200 jars of UR0 -500 each containing 30 capsules.
