Nationwide consultation on election of MMDCE's underway

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, says one of the major reasons Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives must be directly elected by the local people is to assure the MMDCEs of security of tenure and also for them to be directly responsible and accountable to the people who elected them. 

She disclosed that presently, she has received petitions from people for the removal of many of the serving MMDCEs for various reasons with the complainants not willing to negotiate their requests. 

Hajia Alima Mahama was speaking in Kumasi at the Ashanti region's edition of the ongoing nationwide consultative workshop towards the election of MMDCEs. 

The workshop was heavily participated by MMDCEs, Coordinating Directors, Presiding and Assembly Members, representatives of faith-based organisations, traditional leaders and media practitioners, and political party representatives. 

The Local Government Minister noted also that the roadmap aims at organizing the MMDCEs election in 2021 hoping that a referendum to that effect will be held simultaneously with the next District Level Elections scheduled for next year. 

According to her, making election of MMDCEs partisan would break the winner takes all system already in place.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, noted that the election of MMDCEs will bring about the desired decentralization of the local government concept for speedy national development.
