Design Governance Systems That Reflect African Culture – Expert tells AU

Ghana and the rest of the African Continent are today observing Africa Union Day. 25th May is set aside annually to celebrate the founding of the continental body, the African Union (AU).

It is usually characterised by holidays across the continent.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, an International and Security Expert, Irbad Ibrahim said the African Union must priotise its agenda for a mutual discussion of looking for a suitable governance system that fits the African political climate.  

He said political instability and power struggles in most parts of the continent are as a result of the blind application of democratic principles which do not correspond with Africa’s own cultural settings. 

Mr. Ibrahim believes that the way for the instability to end is for Africa to develop its own brand of democracy where a party in power does not feel threatened and under-pressure to deliver within a fixed short term in office.

Ibrahim said until Africa weans itself off foreign support, it will continue to wallow in deprivation.

He said people on the Continent must look inward for solution to their own problems. He cited an example where African wear is being promoted, yet depend on textiles and materials from the Western world to produce the clothes the people wear. 

This, he said, should not be the case.
