Lands Minister initiates peace between feuding mining firms

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, John-Peter Amewu, has directed the Minerals Commission to, as a matter of urgency, undertake the re-demarcation of the boundaries between Shaanxi Mining Company Limited and Cassius Mining Company both operating in Gbane in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region. 

The Minister’s directive follows a meeting held to find an amicable solution to the boundary conflicts in the parties' operational areas. 

Cassius accuses Shaanxi of engaging in activities underground. Shaanxi on the other hand accuses Cassius of trespassing on the surface. 

The statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry underscores that two Committees set up by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the Minister for the Upper East Region to investigate the conflict had recommended a resolution of the conflict and rationalization of both operations in the area. 

It said the Committee’s work confirmed the aforementioned cross-trespassing. 

The Ministry believes the re-demarcation of the boundaries will also be used as basis for further logistical work to finalize resolutions of the conflict and help promote peaceful co-existence for development. 

Failure to comply with the Ministry’s directive by the two companies will lead to the withdrawal of the recalcitrant mining company’s licenses.
