Ghana joins International Day to End Obstetric Fistula

As Ghana joins the global community to observe today as International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, the Media Communication Network,(MCAN) an NGO of public and private Ghanaian journalists, and Communicators is appealing to organisations and individuals for support to construct a hostel to accommodate Caregivers of fistula sufferers at the Tamale Hospital.
 
A statement from the President of MCAN, Roesmary Ardayfio, said Caregivers who accompany the sufferers of fistula to the Tamale repair centre grapple with the issue of accommodation, and have to sleep in the open exposing them to harsh weather conditions.
  
The Network also identified cultural factors such as early pregnancy, delay in seeking medical care, child marriage and early childbearing as factors which result in fistula.
 
It has therefore called for increased awareness of the critical roles of men, women, families and community leaders in addressing the dangers associated with these traditions.
