Campaign against child slavery is critical in the country’s development agenda - Salifu Saeed


The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed says the campaign against child slavery is critical in the forward march of the country’s development agenda. 

He said many children who are potential leaders of the country are disabled due to poor protection from society.

Mr. Saeed was speaking at a meeting with members of a coalition group against child slavery at his residence in Tamale. 

He said the menace can be reduced by identifying and applying solutions to the problem. He pledged the support of the RCC and the MMDAs towards the fight against the menace. 

According to him, when the government’s policies on One District One Factory, One Village One Dam take off, jobs will be created for the youth to stay at home to work. 

A Reverend Sister, Mercy Boateng who spoke on behalf of the coalition requested the Minister to use his office to stop children of school going age from being head porters also known as kayaye. 

She also urged the Regional Minister to review the practice of parents giving their children to their relatives without proper supervision.

The coalition consist of Catholic Reverend Sisters, Reverend Brothers and Priests as well as Civil Society Organizations such as the Street Children Project in Kumasi Africa Development Organization for Migrant (AFDOM), Centre for Initiative Against Trafficking, and the Africa Faith and Justice Network in Washington DC.
