Comoros ex-president Ahmed Abdallah Sambi under house arrest

Former President of the Comoros and a critic of President Azali Assoumani, Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, has been placed under house arrest in order to “preserve” public order. 

A statement from the Interior Ministry said, the decision was taken due to the action of the former President in recent days.

It said Mr Sambi would have to submit an application to the Department responsible for public security, if he needs to travel. 

Reports say Mr Sambi and President Azali met in the great mosque for prayers, and at the end of Friday's religious service, Mr.Sambi’s supporters booed President Azali, an act recognised as a threat to the country's democracy. 

Mr Sambi, who ruled the Comoros from 2006 to 2011, yesterday denounced his house arrest, saying such acts; rather threaten the country’s democracy.
