Baw West District Assembly embarks on massive clean-up 

As part of efforts to keep Zebila Township clean and instill the habit of good sanitation practices among the citizenry, the Bawku West District Assembly in the Upper East Region has undertaken a clean-up across the district.  

It was part of measures instituted by the District Assembly to ensure that the environment was clean, and encouraged good sanitation and good hygienic behaviors and attitudes among the people in the Municipality. 

The exercise started around 0600 hours at the Zebila Police Station with stakeholders in sanitation and refuses management particularly the Zoomlion Ghana Limited, officials from the district Assembly, market men and women, Police officers, Immigration Officers, Fire Service Officers and vocation groups such as hair dressers, dress makers as well as the media. 

The major places of focus were the choked gutters around the Zebila Township, streets, market centres, the lorry stations and parks, residential compounds and other public institutions.  

Speaking to the GBC24 on the sidelines of the exercise, the Member of Parliament for Zebila Constituency, Frank Fuseini Adongo, who took part in the exercise explained that the exercise was in line with government’s vision of ensuring safe environment and the adoption of good sanitation practices. 

He said the exercise was also an indication that the District assembly placed emphasis on environmental health and sanitation issues in the district and was committed to meeting the sanitation needs of the people.  

Mr. Adongo who is also the Deputy Minister of the Upper East Region stated that a clean environment had the potential to prevent diseases such as cholera, malaria, typhoid among others and called for collective efforts from residents in the district to ensure that they fully participated in the exercise and future ones for a conducive environment. 

The Bawku West District Chief Executive, Victoria Ayamba, bemoaned the indiscriminate disposal of waste in the District and called for attitudinal change towards waste management and disposal, adding that the Assembly in collaboration of the Department of Urban Roads had constituted taskforces that distil refuse around major gutters on regular basis, adding that if they see people dumping waste into the gutters they will prosecute them.  

While encouraging the general public to daily clean their environment, she mentioned that the clean-ups will continue every two weeks in the district. 

The DCE used the opportunity to warn all landlords to provide household toilets or risk being prosecuted after a six months notice elapses.
