23 Children rescued from the streets in Tamale

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Sunday night removed twenty three children aged between five and fourteen from the streets. 

The children were picked up by the Beisung Taskforce for loitering around after 10pm. 

They were taken to the Radach Memorial Center where the assembly handed them over to officials of the Social Welfare Department. 

Addressing journalists after the exercise, the Mayor of Tamale, Iddrisu Musah Superior emphasized that the assembly will no longer tolerate irresponsible parenting where some parents leave their children to roam anyhow at night. 

He said the children are exposed to dangers including drug abuse and sexual exploitation. 

“These are children between the ages of six and fourteen, and that is not acceptable, every parent has the responsibility to keep the child safe, and that is why I am sounding this caution to parents, that the TaMA will no longer allow children under age to roam the streets of Tamale,” he said. 

The assembly is grappling with increasing rate of teenage pregnancies, drug abuse and poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). 

The Mayor reiterated his commitment to instilling discipline in the metropolis. 

“These are future presidents, they are future doctors, and future journalists, we are no longer going to allow parents to undermine the future of the metropolis,” he added. 

The Mayor warned that the assembly will soon start prosecuting recalcitrant parents who flout the assembly’s bye-laws and allow their children to loiter around. 

Residents of the metropolis have welcomed the move saying it will help instill discipline in children.
