Association of LPG retailers embark on nationwide strike today over Cylinder re-circulation implementation

Consumers of LPG will not be able to buy gas at retail outlets, as the Association of LPG retailers embark on a nationwide strike.

The operators are demanding a halt to the implementation of government’s cylinder re-circulation policy which they say will render about seven thousand people jobless. 

The cylinder re-circulation policy is being implemented following the gas explosion at Atomic junction which claimed seven lives and injured many. 

The plan is to stop LPG outlets from filling empty gas cylinders as part of measures to stop gas explosions. 

LPG bottling plants are also to be set up outside residential and commercial areas to fill cylinders for sale at retail outlets.  

The Operators, who are opposed to the policy, say their businesses will collapse if government goes ahead to roll out the policy.

Meanwhile, Government has dismissed claims that the Cylinder Re-circulation policy will lead to the loss of seven thousand jobs and challenged the Ghana LPG Operators Association to come up with  alternatives to the policy. 

In a related development, the Chamber of  the Petroleum Consumers, COPEC, is calling for restraint in the implememtation of the Cylinder re-circulation programme.
