The last man to hold the title of Duke of Sussex was Prince Augustus Frederick, the sixth son and ninth child of George III.

Like Harry and Meghan, the duke lived in Kensington Palace. He died in 1843, aged 70.

Augustus twice married for love, but his father did not approve of either match and so did not give his consent to either marriage.
