Lawyers for Opuni accuse EOCO of abuse of power

Lawyers for former COCOBOD Chief Executive, Dr Stephen Opuni have accused the Economic and Organised Crime Office, EOCO, of abuse of power following the freezing of his accounts. 

The lawyers led by Samuel Cudjoe, said EOCO's action to refreeze Mr. Opuni's bank accounts after an order by the court for its release is disrespect to the court and contrary to section 40 of the EOCO Act. 

Mr. Codjoe said EOCO should stop harassing their client. 

In a reaction, lawyer for EOCO, Justin Avotri dismissed the allegations and insisted the law allowed it to freeze the account. 

Dr Opuni applied to the High Court seeking an order for the release of his accounts. 

This application follows a new order obtained to have the accounts of Steven Opuni frozen, hours after the same court had ordered the release of the accounts. 

Dr Stephen Opuni is standing trial for causing financial loss to the state to the tune of GH¢217 million and has pleaded not guilty to all 27 charges levelled against him. 

The case has been adjourned to the 21st of this moth for ruling.
