Security agencies embark on OPERATION KONDANLGOU 2018 in Bawku

The Ministry of National Security in collaboration with all the security agencies in the country is currently embarking on an operation code-named OPERATION KONDANLGOU – 2018 along the Northern borders of Ghana to help combat cross border crimes.  

Ghana is also collaborating with neighboring countries such as Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso on the operation. 

Consequently, similar operations are ongoing along the borders of the said countries. 

The operation is aimed at keeping criminal elements in check and to provide security for law abiding persons and make the country safer. 

The Technical Director at the Ministry of National Security, Ben Dere, said the exercise will help Ghana and its neighboring countries to share ideas on how to combat crime. 

He said all the security personnel as part of the exercise will equipped with modern methods of combating crime. 

OPERATION KONDANLGOU – 2018 started May 15, 2018 and is estimated to last a few days. 

The operational Command Centre is located in Bawku in the Upper East Region. 

The operation is aimed at combating cross border crimes such as terrorism, human trafficking, armed robbery, smuggling among others. 

The coverage areas for the operation are Kulungungu, Namon, Bunkpurugu, Nalerigu, Gambaga, Walewale, and Nakpanduri. 

Other areas are Bolgatanga, Tongo, Nangodi, Zebila, Binduri, Pusiga, Sapeliga and Garu. 

As part of the Operations, security personnel will conduct joint border patrols, joint snap or permanent checkpoints to help monitor and control the movement of persons within the area of operation. 

Speaking to Radio Ghana’s Samuel Ayammah, the Deputy Director Army Operations who is the Team leader in-charge of planning, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Ansah-Akrofi, said highways and other relevant routes will also be patrolled. 

He added that random searches will be conducted for arms and ammunition as well as contraband goods and also man identified Beats and Pillars along the country’s borders. 

The presence of the numerous security personnel in the Bawku Township has kept fear in the residents. 

But a press release from the Ministry of National Security signed by the sector Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has assured residents in the operational area to remain calm and cooperate with the security agencies. 

Representatives from Ghana’s neighboring countries include Mr. Kafando Jean Jaeque a police officer from Burkina Faso, Captain Akila Ditorgma Gendarmerie from Togo and Lieutenant Colonel Sake Muhammed from Benin.
