Government asked to address challenges deterring graduates from setting up own businesses 

The Director, Labour Research and Policy Institute of the Trades Union Congress, Dr. Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, has appealed to government to address challenges that deter graduates from setting up their own businesses after school.  

He said challenges with tax and interest rate regimes in the country should be addressed to create favourable environment for the teeming unemployed youth.  

According to Dr. Nyarko Otoo, this will help graduates to deliver efficiently compared to anybody in the world.  

He said this on GBC's Current Affairs Programme, ‘Talking Point,’ which discussed the "Integrity of NaBCo".  

He said though NaBCo is a good initiative, the quest to reduce unemployment should not end there, government should pursue long term measures which must be properly synchronised to achieve the intended results.

Lead NABCO Implementor, Dr. Anyars Ibrahim, said government's desire is to reduce unemployment to the barest minimum.  

He said it has learnt great lessons from previous social interventions which failed and will bring the needed expertise on board to ensure NaBCo succeeds. 

Dr. Anyars said it is only through drastic measures like NaBCo that will help the nation address unemployment issues.

President of the Association of Graduates in Skills Development, Desmond Bress-Biney, urged NaBCo to develop the skills of graduates they will employ so that in future they can establish their own businesses.  

He called on the Ghana Revenue Authority and Registrar General's Department to collaborate with NaBCo to make it easy for job seekers who are trained to register their own businesses.
