Unknown gunmen kill 23 people in northwest Burundi 

Unknown gunmen have killed at least 23 people in an attack on a village in northwest Burundi.  

Eye witnesses say the attackers went from house to house shooting and stabbing their victims, and later crossed into neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Officials say the toll could rise as the search for more victims continue. 

The attack happened just five days before a disputed constitutional referendum which could enable President Pierre Nkurunziza to remain in power until 2034.
