Palmer-Buckle appointed new Archbishop of Cape Coast Diocese 


Pope Francis has appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Charles Palmer-Buckle as the new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cape Coast.

Archbishop Bishop Palmer-Buckle replaces Archbishop Mathias Kobena Nketsiah, former Bishop of Cape Coast following his retirement at age 75.

The Secretary General of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference, The Reverend Father Lazarus Anondee, in a press briefing in Accra, said Most Rev. Jean Marie Speich, the Apostolic Nuncio, made the disclosure.

Born 15 June 1950 in Axim, Ghana, Most Reverend Charles Gabriel Palmer- Buckle  was a former teacher and a key figure in the political scene in Ghana. 

He was ordained a priest on December 12, 1976 in Accra, appointed the first Bishop of Koforidua on July 6, 1992, consecrated on January 6, 1993 and appointed as an Archbishop of Accra on May 28, 2005.

From 1994 to 2004 he served as the Bishop-Chairman for the Department of Socio-Economic Development of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference in Ghana, and from 1995 to 2003 was President of Caritas Africa Region and First Vice President of Caritas International, a federation of 198 member-organizations in 154 countries all over the world with headquarters in the Vatican City. 

From May 2002 to October 2004, Charles Gabriel Palmer- Buckle was a member of the nine-member National Reconciliation Commission (NRC), set up by the Kufuor's government to bring truth and reconciliation in Ghana following human rights abuses.

In 2002, Most Reverend Charles Gabriel Palmer- Buckle apologized on behalf of Africans for the part Africans played in the slave trade, and the apology was accepted by bishop John Ricard of Pensacola-Tallahassee.

In 2005, he became the 4th Ordinary for Accra as the Metropolitan Archbishop, since its establishment as a diocese. 
 
Most Reverend Charles Gabriel Palmer- Buckle has remained vocal in the political scene of Ghana and Africa on issues including political violence and homosexuality.

Reverend Father Anondee, told the Ghana News Agency, (GNA), in an interview that, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle will be installed as the new Archbishop of Cape Coast within two weeks.

He said so far no Bishop has been appointed to the Accra Arcdioceses as at the time of the press briefing, so in the interim, an Administrator will be appointed to replace Archbishop Palmer-Buckle for the Accra Diocese before a substantive Bishop is appointed.
