Call for interventions to improve nutritional needs of household

Findings from a 5-year project undertaken by the Nutrition Links Project in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region have been disseminated to stakeholders at the Miklin Hotel in Accra.

The project which was undertaken in collaboration with the University of Ghana Department of Nutrition and Food Science and School of Public Health, McGill University - Canada, World Vision, Heifer Ghana and local institutional partners, was to improve the health, nutrition and livelihoods of household in the district.

Speaking at the forum, a researcher and senior lecturer of the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, Dr. Richmond Aryeetey, said the project among other things encouraged the intake of eggs and vegetables since these are great contributors to healthy growth.

Professor Marquis of the McGill University said the Upper Manya Krobo District was chosen because of its unique health needs and also due to the University of Ghana ongoing nutrition programme in the area.

She said during the period under review, it was identified that most of the nutritional needs of children was as a result of poor feeding habits after breastfeeding.

Professor Marquis said that though the situation is not bad, a lot of efforts must go into education, sensitization and tailored programmes that target the poor and vulnerable.

The meeting was attended by stakeholders in the health, education, district assembly, agriculture, gender, academia traditional leaders and the media.
