Experts push for sustainable funding for Nation Builders Corps

The Head of Department of Urban and Environmental Management, Institute of Local Government Studies, Frederick Agyarko Oduro, is advocating sustainable funding for the Nation Builders Corps. 

He believes the programme is critical to local governance, but funding with revenue allocated to the Assemblies will be a drain on them. 

He told Radio Ghana's Ibrahim Kwarteng, that as it stands now, revenue mobilization at the Assemblies is a challenge.

Meanwhile, government says it is holding discussions on funding and sustainability of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO). 

This is to among other things, determine the percentages to be allocated to the programme from the District Assemblies Common Fund. 

An official at the office of the Vice President, Dr Samuel Frimpong told Ibrahim Kwarteng  that the policy document on NABCO has been done and approved by cabinet, what is left is a legal backing to the module. 

In a related development, a Development Economist and Social Policy Analyst, Dr. Theo Richardson says the implementation of the Nation Builders Corps is an indication of government's determination to industrialise the economy. 

However, it must focus on value addition. 

Dr. Richardson encouraged government to lay more emphasis on the manufacturing sector, adding that this will lead to an expansion of the economy.
