Hundreds arrive in Accra for World Press Freedom celebration
Over 200 people comprising of journalists, human rights activists and representatives of international agencies, have arrived in Ghana to celebrate the 25th World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) this year, being hosted in Ghana.
The main events, jointly organized by UNESCO and the Government of Ghana, are slated for May 2nd and 3rd.
This year’s global theme is "Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law," and will cover issues of media and the transparency of the political process, the independence and media literacy of the judicial system, and the accountability of state institutions towards the public.
A statement signed by the President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Affail Monney, welcomed all delegates to the WPFD which commenced with a Vigil and a welcome reception at the International Press Centre on May 1.
The Vigil was used as an occasion to remember journalists who had died in the line of duty across the world.
