perpetrators of open defecation will be prosecuted – Bolga MCE

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Joseph Amiyuure, has said the assembly is revamping its operations in line with President Nana Addo’s vision of promoting environmental cleanliness in all urban communities to reduce communicable diseases.  

He said the assembly will intensify hygiene education to rekindle the communal spirit of the people to combat poor sanitation practices to avoid littering and the disposal of solid and liquid waste at public places. 

Mr. Amiyuure said that the government's efforts to woo investors into the country will be hampered if Ghanaians and for that matter the people in the area do not observe environmental sanitation. 

He deplored the people's lukewarm attitude towards environmental sanitation, saying, such behavior will thwarts our efforts to make prevention the safest way of health delivery in the country. 

Speaking to Radio Ghana’s Samuel Ayammah in Bolgatanga, the MCE decried the haphazard manner in which some structures are constructed, especially on waterways, and called on officials of the Town and Country Planning Department to be alive to their responsibilities. 

He cautioned people who turn uncompleted buildings and drainage systems into refuse dumps to desist from the practice. 

He reminded landlords of their responsibility to ensure that gutters near their buildings are properly taken care of. 

Mr. Amiyuure exhorted owners of undeveloped plots of land to maintain them at all times. 

He urged landlords and kiosk owners to register their structures with the municipal assembly, adding that a task force is to be set up to get rid of all unauthorized structures. 

Mr. Amiyuure revealed that the assembly has started desilting choked gutters in the municipality to ensure smooth flow of water when it rains. 

He said the assembly is collaborating with the Zoomlion department in the municipality to keep the area clean at all times. 

Mr. Amiyuure expressed worry about the way the people in the area are littering haphazardly. 

He said the assembly will soon start prosecuting people who will be caught practicing open defecation.
