Labour Unions in the Upper East Region observes May Day Celebration

In the Upper East Region, Correspondent Samuel Ayammah reports that the occasion of this year’s May Day celebration was marked with a procession through the principal streets of Bongo. 

Amid brass band music, they carried placards with inscriptions which expressed their concerns on national and development issues. 

Some of the workers clad in various union attire had placards some of which read: “workers we deserve good remuneration”, “increase our salaries” among others.  

Workers from the various unionized labour groups later converged on the Bongo Senior High School Park to observe the day. 

The national theme for this year’s celebration: "Sustaining Development Goals and Decent Work; The Role of Social Partners”, purposely to highlight the importance of social partnership and what a strong partnership, characterized by mutual trust and respect, can achieve. 

Reading the speech on behalf of the General Secretary, the Upper East  Regional Secretary for the TUC, Augustine Adongo Apambilla, 
commended workers and labor unions for their invaluable role towards nation building. 

He said workers deserve better conditions of service and therefore expect government to stand by them by creating the needed working environment for them to operate. 

The Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari, said President Nana Addo led administration acknowledges that its ambition to transform the country beyond aid will only be realized if all the productive energies of people are mobilized. 

He said it is for this reason, the government is embarking on the formalization of the economy through the National Identification, digitization, street and property addressing system. 

Mr. Bukari stated that job skills development and training are also key on government’s agenda. 

The Minister said while government works at improving the work environment, it is also expected that workers will also play their part by supporting policy implementation. 

There were solidarity messages from the various union groups present at the occasion. 

Some outstanding workers were awarded with citation and table top refrigerators, and laptop computers, TV sets among others. 

The Bolgatanga Municipal Coordinating Director, Alhaji Abass Ketigwe was emerged the best worker in the region. 

He took home a fridge and a citation.
