Russia election: Muted Western reaction to Putin victory

There has been a muted response from Western countries to Russian President Vladimir Putin's election victory. 

This is in contrast to congratulatory messages pouring in from traditionally socialist states. 

China said Mr. Putin's victory is a chance to keep promoting ties to a higher level in the interest of regional and global peace and tranquility.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said the strategic partnership between the two countries is at its best level in history.
 
The leaders of Kazakhstan, Belarus, Venezuela, Bolivia and Cuba are among others who sent their best wishes, but so far, no Western leaders have responded to his victory. 

Germany's new Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas said Russia will remain a difficult partner but will still be needed in resolving major international conflicts.
