Call for deliberate policy to check population growth

The Executive Director of the National Population Council, Dr. Liticia Appiah, has warned that if the current trend in population growth in Ghana is not checked it can seriously undermine development.  

She said as a nation, a deliberate policy of three children per family should be the way to go to control population growth.  

Speaking on our Current Affairs Programme "Focus" which looks at the latest population figures released by the Ghana Statistical Service, Mrs Appiah said with life expectancy now very high, the number of children per couple should be reduced to create a good life for both, children and  parents.

A Local Governance Expert at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Fred Oduro Agyarko said the 38.8% captured for the youth bracket is good for the country. 

He said government should develop deliberate polices targeted at the youth to accelerate the country's development. 

He said if government fails to train the youth to take over leadership roles, then Ghana will only be breeding the next stage of criminals.

On doubts about the new population figures, a Statistician from the Ghana Statistical Service, Micheal Acheampong said figures the service generates are accurate.  

He said the Ghana Statistical Service uses one of the best methods in data collection and processing.  

Mr. Acheampong urged government to use the figures to plan for development.

A Financial Analyst, Dr. Emmanuel Ashiley said for government to get the best of the youthful population, resources of the country must be put into judicious use, and reduce corruption.  

He said government can develop a deliberate policy by training the youth and exporting their expertise to other countries.
