Thirty brilliant students honoured at 2018 President's Independence Day Awards

Thirty deserving students have been honoured at this year’s President's Independence Day Awards.

Drawn from all the ten regions of the country, the awardees were selected based on their exceptional performance in the 2017 Basic Education Certificate Examination as well as other curricula activities.

President Akufo-Addo reiterated the importance government places on access to quality education.

He indicated that as government strives to move the country beyond aid, educating future leaders cannot be compromised as it is the most effective way to change the fortunes of the economy. 

For twenty five years, the President's Independence Day Awards has been awarding 20 scholarships to brilliant students who excelled in the Basic Education Certificate Examination as well as other curricula activities and exemplary conduct and good moral. 

Two students, male and female are selected from each region across the country after going through interviews at the district level. 

This year, four students who are physically challenged were also recognised including six who excelled in specific subjects bringing the number of awardees to thirty. 

President Akufo, commending the students said education should be a right for all children as it is the effective tool for development.

He encouraged the students to continue to be trailblazers as they represent the future. 


The Minister for Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempah said the Ministry will continue to pursue policies to ensure that quality education is not compromised.

The students had a message for the President 

The awardees are part of the first batch of beneficiaries of the FSH. 

Each student was given a crystal plaque, a citation, a gold medallion, GH¢1000 each and products from the sponsors.
