Today marks Ghana's 61st independence


The people of Ghana are today celebrating the 61st independence anniversary.

Thousands are expected to gathered at the independece square in the capital, Accra, to greet the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is the special guest of honour. 

Last night, there wwere fireworks at the Kwame Nkrumah Water Gardens in Accra and across the country. 

The Gold Coast Legislative Assembly was prorogued at midnight 0f 1957.

This morning there will be parade of school children and security forces at the independence square in Accra and all the regions of Ghana.

The Independence parade is an annual event held at the Independence Square, as part of the celebration to commemorate the declaration of Independence on 6th  March 1957.

In 1957, when the leaders of the former British colony of the Gold Coast sought an appropriate name for their newly independent state the first black African nation to gain its independence from colonial rule they named their new country after ancient Ghana.

The 61st Independence Day celebration is under the theme “Ghana Beyond Aid” and is expected to attract high profile personalities across Africa.
