Residents of Navrongo Embarks on Massive Clean-Up Exercise

As part of preparations towards the celebration of Ghana’s 61ST Independence Day Anniversary on the 6th of March, 2018 the people of the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region has embarked on a clean-up exercise to rid their surroundings of filth. 

Staff of Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly, workers of Zoomlion, opinion leaders, Keep-fit clubs, NADMO staffs and women groups in the municipality took part in the clean-up exercise. 

The  Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chief Executive, Williams Aduum, who led his people in the clean-up exercise said even though the exercise was geared towards the independence day celebration, the assembly will organize regular clean-up exercises from time to time in order to keep the municipality clean at all times. 

The MCE indicated that the assembly is serious about improving sanitation in the area, the purpose of which the assembly is partnering with the appropriate agencies to enhance proper sanitation in the municipality. 

Mr. Aduum said the exercise was aimed at creating awareness on the importance of practicing proper waste disposing habits in order to kick out preventable diseases like Cholera. 

He said the move was to help reduce the resultant toll of such diseases on the finances of individual families in the communities and the country at large. 

The MCE appealed to residents in the area to attach importance to environmental sanitation, and work together to rid the communities of filth. 

This, he said, is the way to go, to prevent the outbreak and spread of diseases. 

He said the assembly is putting measures in place to desilt all the gutters to avoid any inconveniences during the raining season.  

The MCE said without doubt, sanitation is very important and key to national development. 

Mr. Aduum said adequate sanitation and hygiene are all essential ingredients to ensure good human health. 

Touching on the Dignified City Award of the Sanitation Challenge for Ghana, the MCE said the Kassena-Nankana Municipal assembly is the only assembly from the Upper East Region competing with other 16 assemblies across the country. 

He said the assembly is doing its best to win the ultimate prize. 

A prize purse of 1,285,000 pounds has been earmarked for various categories of awards to MMDAs which successfully implement their strategies.  

Out of this amount 400,000 pounds will be won as first prize by the Metropolitan and Municipal Assembly category, whilst the District Assembly category will take 285,000 pounds as first prize. 

A pot of 600,000 pounds will be distributed to other prize categories to be determined during the implementation process. 

The Dignified City Award is a three-year award process spanning June 2016 to June 2019 and it is the second phase of the SC4Gh’s Duapa Award held in 2016. 

Meanwhile, Mr. Aduum called on the people in the area to remain calm since his outfit together with the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Police Command has put innovative measures in place to minimize robbery cases in the municipality.
