Ghana National Household Registry (GNHR) launched in Pusiga

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisah Djabah, has said in order to sustain and deepen the data collection on extremely poor households, the government of Ghana through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection established the Ghana National Household Registry, (GNHR). 

She said the move is to ensure that social protection benefits get to the people who really need them for production inclusion where the government will leave nobody out or behind. 

She said targeting is very critical in Social Protection as it seeks to correctly and efficiently identify the recipients of social benefits.  

Speaking at the launch of the GNHR at Pusiga in the Upper East Region, Madam Otiko Djabah said the GNHR aims to enhance transparency and accountability in selecting beneficiaries of social protection programs across MMDAs by establishing a credible, up-to-date single national household registry that will ensure efficiency and coordination in implementation of social protection.  

The Gender Minister called on MPs, DCEs, Chiefs, Opinion leaders, traditional rulers across the country’s borders and other stakeholders in the Upper East Region to own the data collection exercise. 

She encouraged various households to take this exercise very seriously. 

Madam Otiko Djabah entreated field staffs to adhere to simple safety rules as they travel the length and breadth of the region to get this all important job done. 

The Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Frank Fuseini Adongo, said to ensure a successful data collection exercise in the region, there is the need for all key stakeholders to support the exercise. 

According to him, any attempt by any household to sabotage the exercise or prevent its smooth running will be injurious to the future development of this region in particular. 

He said the exercise has the tendency to inform policy initiatives and direction of government. 

The Deputy Regional Minister assured the GNHR, enumerators, supervisors, and zonal Co-coordinators of the Regional Coordinating Council’s support in the exercise.  

The National Co-ordinator of GNHR, Dr. Prosper Laari, expressed the need for a scientific identification and categorization of vulnerable in the country. 

He said the leadership of the country cannot continue to select beneficiaries of social protection programmes in ways other than households that truly need it. 

Dr. Laari said the proxy means test by the GNHR therefore helps in using verifiable indicators to categorize households as poor, non-poor and extremely poor.
