Mahama Ayariga disputes claim of ignorance by US Embassy on Gitmo 2 refugee status Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has revealed that the US government made a financial commitment of three hundred thousand dollars for the upkeep of the two Guatanamo Bay detainees. He said the US Embassy in Ghana and the Case Officer at the National Security Office in Ghana were in constant engagement during the process. The US Ambassador to Ghana he pointed out cannot claim ignorance of the refugee status of the two. Speaking on our Current Affairs Programme, 'Focus' Mr Ayariga said the two needed some form of identity to open bank accounts and this necessitated the granting of refugee status. A private Legal Practitioner, Professor Eugene Mensah also disputed the claim of ignorance by the US Ambassador on the status of the two adding that, the issue is a national security one and must be handled tactfully.
