Jazz legend Hugh Masekela laid to rest Internationally acclaimed jazz musician Hugh Masekela was buried today in a private ceremony. A funeral service was held at the Johannesburg Botanical Garden in Emmarentia in the morning before proceeding to the Westpark Cemetery. A family member said the family was fulfilling Masekela’s final wishes. “This is a man who has been famous his whole life, all he asked this time was for his family to have this little piece of him without the public,” the relative said. Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo described him as unique and compelling. “He was one of the most prominent of the South African exiles, who kept the struggle alive before the eyes and conscience of the world, and he did it largely through his wonderful music.” Nana Addo in his tribute to Masekela.
