EOCO has no right to ‘evict’ Deputy EC Chairperson - Lawyer

A Human Rights Lawyer, David Ametefe says the Economic and Organised Crime Office [EOCO] has no right to force the Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Madam Georgina Opoku Amankwah out of office. 

He said EOCO over stepped its boundary in the action it took. 

Mr. Ametefe said the Deputy Chairperson's Office is equal to that of a High Court Judge, and therefore it is only the President who can authorize her to proceed on leave, or call for her interdiction. 

Lawyer Ametefe said Madam Georgina Opoku Amankwah's position is equal to those under Article 146, when it comes to disciplinary action where necessary. 

Meanwhile, a Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Alidu Seidu says the use of force by State institutions especially security forces to get things done is not the right way to go. 

Commenting on the action by EOCO to force out Deputy EC Chairperson, Georgina Opoku Amankwah, Dr. Seidu said in a democratic dispensation such practices are an affront to the tenets of democracy. 

He said the use of dialogue in every circumstance is very key.
