Following the decision taken by the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, to grant a request by the state broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to establish courts to prosecute defaulters of the fees, more people are rushing to pay their TV Licence fees. From Monday January 2 to date, about 164 of owners of television sets have rushed to the Sunrise FM premises to pay their TV Licence fees asanyone who fails to pay his or her monthly licence fee will soon be put before court to face trial per section 1(a) of the TV Licence Act 1966 (NLCD 89). According to the letter issued to the Judicial Secretary to the Director General of GBC and copied to the office of the Chief Justice and the Judicial Service, the special courts have beenallocated in all the ten regions. The courts are expected to begin sitting today Thursday, January 4th, this year. Its sitting starts from 8:30am to 4:00pm on matters relating to TV Licence fee.
