TUC backs court action against Gold Fields The TUC has described the proposed retrenchment by Gold Fields as a demonstration of bad faith and in breach of the Mining Development Agreement it signed with Government in 2016. The Union is therefore calling on Government to ensure that Gold Fields implements its side of the Development Agreement and refrain from adducing additional arguments to justify what is basically an unjustifiable action. Mining firm, Goldfields Ghana earlier this month announced plans to lay off about one thousand five hundred workers. The retrenchment will affect most staff at the Tarkwa mine. A statement from the TUC's Secretary General, Dr Yaw Baah said the proposed retrenchment is unfortunate. It said the Ghana Mineworkers Union of TUC is already in court pursuing justice for its members at Gold Fields and the people of Ghana over what it described as blatant violations. The TUC says it fully supports the court action. TUC says it will in the coming weeks pursue additional measures to ensure that Gold Fields does not renege on its contractual obligations to further compound the country's unemployment situation.
