Public sector workers assured of job security during implementation of public sector reforms programme

Government has assured public sector workers that there will be no job losses during implementation of the Public Sector Reforms programme.

The Programme, to be implemented in phases over a 10-year period after a Cabinet approval of it, will seek to address the myriad of challenges undermining optimal performance of the public sector to stimulate private sector and ultimately national growth.

The Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, gave the assurance in an interview with GBC in Kumasi at a Stakeholders’ Validation Workshop on the Draft National Public Sector Reform Strategy.

Mr.Osafo-Maafo, explained that the current government inherited an IMF endorsed Public Sector Reform document which had also been approved by the Cabinet of the NDC government.

He said upon realizing the good objectives set out in the document, the NPP administration only sought the consent of the IMF to review it.

Subsequently, a draft implementation strategy was developed after broader consultation with experts and identifiable groups.

The Workshop in Kumasi, which is a sequel to an earlier one in Accra, was meant for the participants who represented wider interest parties, particularly the private sector from the northern sector of Ghana, to make an input.

Mr.Osafo-Maafo noted that the ultimate goal of the Public Sector Reform programme is to address identifiable bottle-necks that undermine productivity in the public service to enable the sector to become a catalyst for economic growth.

He said upon a full implementation of the programme, the public sector will expand to create space for jobs while becoming very efficient and productive.

The Chief Executive of the Public Sector Reforms Secretariat, Kusi Boafo, noted that after the stakeholder’ validation workshop, the Draft Public Sector Reform Strategy document will then be forwarded to Cabinet for consideration and approval after which it will be implemented to inject vibrancy into public service.
