Kassena-Nankana MCE Vows To Fight Galamsey  


The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chief Executive, Williams Aduum, has vowed to fight illegal mining or galamsey activities in the Municipality. 

He said he was determined to support the efforts and resolve shown by President Akufo-Addo and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in the fight against illegal mining and wanton destruction of forest resources in the country. 

Mr. Aduum made the assertion when a joint military, Police and Immigration stormed Naaga a community in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality to flash out illegal miners in the area. 

The MCE appealed to the people who are engaged in illegal gold mining, popularly referred to as “galamsey” to be patriotic and quit the activity. 

He said they should accept to respect the government’s ban to end the massive environmental destruction. 

He indicated that the pollution of water bodies and degradation of forests and farmlands could have dire consequences and should not continue. 

Mr. Aduum urged the chiefs in the area to take centre stage in the fight to stop illegal mining and safeguard the country’s environment. 

He said they owed it a duty to themselves and posterity to protect the forest and water bodies. 

Two illegal miners were arrested whilst the rest took to their heels upon seeing the security men. 

Five motor bikes and a motor tricycle suspected to be owners of the illegal miners who left the site upon seeing the security personnel were seized and sent to the Navrongo police station. 

some items suspected to be Marijuana or "wee" was also found at the mining site.  The illegal miners have numerous deep dug pits dotted all-over the two sites they are operating. 

Some residents in Kologo and Naaga alleged that the Paramount Chief of Naaga, Naba Orlando Ayamga Awini, who is also the President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs are aware of the illegal miners in the area. 

According to the residents, the chief and his divisional chiefs normally send their people to come and count the number of pits operating daily and charge the miners. 

But the assembly and the security agencies in the municipality said when they approached Naba Orlando Ayamga Awini he rubbished the allegation levelled against him by the residents. 

Radio Ghana’s Samuel Ayammah reports that school children in Kologo and Naaga absent themselves from school daily to engage in all manner of jobs at mining sites. 

The negative impact of illegal mining operations on education, especially at the primary and junior high school levels in the area, had become alarming.
