Media Coalition Against Galamsey wants stiffer punishment against people engaged in galamsey

The Media Coalition Against Galamsey is planning to petition the Chief Justice and Attorney General for stiffer punishment against persons who engage in galamsey. 

According to the Coalition some judges instead of prescribing the full punishment of between 30 thousand to 300 thousand penalty units or from 10 to 30 years imprisonment, give far less than that. 

It cites a recent case where a judge who fined some chinese two thousand four hundred when the minimum should have been 360 thousand cedis.
 
In an interview with Radio Ghana the convenor of the group Ken Ashiegbey says such lenient sentences are killing the zeal for the galamsey fight.
