Bongo Man shares humorous moment with JJ President Rawlings  

Congolese Soukous Musician, Kanda Bongo Man who is in Accra to perform for the African Legends Night called on former President Jerry John Rawlings at his Ridge office in Accra last Friday.

Bongoman whose signature dance moves have endeared him to many across the continent, said he was overwhelmed by the opportunity to call on the former President describing him as an idol he had wanted to meet for decades.

“I was here (Ghana) in 1994 to perform for the Panafest Festival alongside Stevie Wonder but I missed an opportunity to meet you,” he told Flt Lt Rawlings.

The former President complimented the soukous dancer whose dance skills gave birth to the intricate kwassa kwassa dance rhythm where the hips move back and forth while the hands move to follow the hips.

Bongo Man who could not hide his excitement meeting JJ for the first time, shared a humorous moment with former President Rawlings when he decided to match the Congolese hat for hat by donning his Texan hat to take some memorable photos.

Congolese music legend Kanda Bongo Man will headline the 2017 edition of Vodafone African Legends Night.

The 6th edition of the music show will take place at the Banquet Hall State House in Accra. 

Born January 1, 1955, Kanda Bongo Man’s music career took off in full flight after moving to Paris in 1979 where his music started to incorporate elements of then-vibrant zouk music. 

His first solo albums, ‘Iyole’ in 1981 and ‘Djessy’ in 1982, were instant hits.

The Congolese singer, known for the structural changes, is widely credited for revolutionising Soukous music by encouraging guitar solos after every verse and even sometimes at the beginning of the song.

His form of Soukous gave birth to the popular ‘Kwassa Kwassa’ dance rhythm where hips move back and forth while the hands move to follow the hips.

Kanda Bongo Man is expected to mount the stage of African Legends Night alongside other Ghanaian music legends to thrill audience to some of his popular songs from his celebrated albums of ‘Kwassa Kwassa’, ‘Amour Fou’ among others.

Other performers for the African Legends Night are Abrantie Amakye Dede and Daddy Lumba.
