UNITE TO DEVELOP LA –  VINCENT ODOTEI


The Member of Parliament for the La Dadekotopon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region Mr. Vincent Odotei has called on the people of La to be united in order to fight the development challenges that confront them.

“We need to be united to face all the challenges in La Dadekotopon especially land disputes and unemployment” he stated.

The MP who doubles up as the Deputy Minister of Communications was speaking to GBCONLINE (gbcghana.com) at a ceremony to place a ban on drumming in the La traditional area. This is one of the rites that precede the celebration of Homowo. 

Mr. Odotei said, the occasion offers another opportunity to work together with a common goal of uplifting the area.

He extolled the tradition of the people and added that he is there to celebrate with them not only as an MP but also as a native of La.

The ban on drumming is a period where any form of noise-making is frowned upon. Apart from the drumming that is mentioned, clapping, funerals and any form of merrymaking that is likely to generate some noise is not allowed in the traditional area.

The Homowo festival is celebrated annually mainly by the Ga communities along the coast (La, Osu, Nungua, Teshie, Tema, Ga Mashie, Ada, Shai) and in the hinterland where there are Ga villages. It was instituted as a way of celebrating a bumper harvest after a long period of famine in the past. Literally translated, Homowo means hooting at hunger.
