Government presents Guantanamo Bay Agreement to Parliament

Government says it has left the decision to continue to host or return the two Guantanamo Bay Detainees Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih al-Dhuby in the hands of Parliament to determine. 

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, stated this on the Floor of Parliament when she appeared before the Lawmakers to respond to a question on the current position of the government of Ghana on Ghana’s hosting of the two Guantanamo Bay Detainees in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling. 

The question was in the name of the MP for North Tongu and Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. 

The Minister told the House that technically there was no agreement between Ghana and the US Government on the two detainees, saying what exists between the two nations was just a note-verbal. 

She said government is complying with the directives of the Supreme Court.

The agreement on the two former Guantanamo Bay Detainees Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih al-Dhuby was presented to the House in line with the Supreme Court ruling on Thursday and referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs for consideration.
