Ghana Moves on in Badminton Tournament


It was all joy for players and officials when Ghana's Emmanuel Yaw Donkor brushed aside his Nigeria opponent Usman Ayo Isiaq to progress to the semifinals of the Lagos international Badminton classics championship in a renewed rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria.
 
He won 21-9, 21-11 in a game which caught the attention of every singles individual in the sports hall. Though Usan was determined to give of his best, Donkor outclassed his challenger with skills to qualify from the quarter finals. 

To add to this, Donkor again teamed up with Stella Amassah to hammer Ayila Gwambeh and Patricia Akpusugh also of Nigeria 21-11, 21-7 in two straight sets. The win gave them qualification to the semifinals of the mixed doubles from the quarter finals. 

 However, Ghana could not stand the might of the rest of the countries as they lost all their games in both men doubles and the women doubles games.

Ghana now has two slots in the semifinals to fight for the twenty thousand Dollars prize money which will be shared for the winners of the match in the eleven nations tournament.

In an interview with our correspondent, Emmanuel Donkor acknowledged how tough the task ahead is but with determination he will sail through. He said it takes effort through training to match up with other challenges but the team will need the support of corporate bodies to perform better in other tournaments.
