Deputy Minister Cautions Parents Over Children's Trip To Kuwait, Qatar & Saudi Arabia

The Deputy Minister for Gender and Social Protection, Gifty Twum Ampofo has cautioned parents against encouraging their children to travel to Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to seek greener pastures. 

She said, the Nana Addo led government has put measures in place to create jobs for the youth in the country to make life worth living for them in order not to travel abroad to suffer.   

Mrs. Twum Ampofo sounded the word of caution at a durbar for the celebration of Ohum festival at Old Tafo in the East Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region. 

Mrs. Twum Ampofo who is also the Member of Parliament, (MP) for the Abuakwa North announced that the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection has taken into consideration to register individuals who are financially unstable onto the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) to support intelligent but needy students in every part of Ghana. 

She again, pleaded with the residents of Old Tafo to see development as collective and a shared responsibility. 

Explaining that the people of Old Tafo must come together to work hard to make Tafo a better place. 

The Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Daffour, also asked the chief and the people of Old Tafo to help the government curb the galamsey menace which denting the image of the Municipality and the region as a whole. 

According to him, the Birim River which is the source of purified water in most parts of Eastern Region is being polluted through galamsey. 

Mr. Kwakye Daffour further said, the substances that are being used in extracting minerals from the ground are very poisonous which can result in low sperm count among the males in the area. 

He again asked them not to hesitate in contacting him for any support that will help in developing the area. 

The Regional Minister reiterated that the one million- dollar which will be allocated to every constituency as promised by the NPP government, will soon be materialised and asked the chief and elders of Old Tafo to ensure that the money is channelled to developmental project. 

The Tafohene, Osabarima Adusei Peassah, revealed at the durbar that it is his utmost desire to seek for academic excellence within his township hence the institution of Educational Fund Plan to support school children who excel in academics by offering them scholarships to climb high in education. 

Osabarima Adusei Peassah asked for unity among chiefs irrespective of their political affiliation, and pleaded with them to seek for the development of Tafoman. 

Ohum is a commemorative festival that spells out the religion and origin of the Akyem people. 

It is celebrated on the Tuesday after Akwasidae to remember the settlement of the Akyem on the eastern bank of River Birim. 

The festival was on the theme: Community Development; My responsibility, Your responsibility.
