AMA gears up for demolition of unauthorised structures 

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), says it is taking the necessary legal steps to demolish all unauthorised structures within the East Legon Green Belt and surcharge owners for the cost of demolition. 

According to the AMA, the activities of the developers constitute a total disregard of a judgement by the Accra High Court that ruled in favour of the East Legon Residents Association and ordered the Lands Commission, AMA and EPA to pull down such structures.

This was because the green belt is an ecologically important area that needs to be preserved.

A statement signed by the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Sam Ayeh-Datey, said following this ruling the AMA, issued a 21-day ultimatum to encroachers to cease all building activities on the East Legon Green Belt as their activities constituted contempt of court.

The statement said though AMA was on the 6th of June served with a writ by some developers over the said area seeking to restrain the assembly from demolishing structures, it will take all the legal steps to carry out such an exercise because developers and encroachers continue to erect structures with impunity.
